A man has appeared in court over the death of a shopping centre worker who was found with multiple stab wounds in a vehicle in its car park.

Vasile Gorghescu appeared at the Old Bailey accused of the murder of 45-year-old Chaudhary Mahmood.

Prosecutor William Davis said Mr Gorghescu, 41, drove from his home in Southampton to the Stratford Centre in east London on 8 January.

He met Mr Mahmood in the car park where he attacked him, the court heard.

A post-mortem examination found the worker was stabbed 27 times. Mr Gorghescu then left the car and returned home, Mr Davis said.

The court heard that police discovered Mr Mahmood's body in the early hours of 10 January.

Mr Gorghescu was remanded in custody and will next appear at court for a plea hearing on 2 April.

A two-week trial was set for 28 October at the Old Bailey.
