Bodycam footage shows Met PC punching man who called police

A serving Met Police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a man who had called the police to report a crime.

PC Jonathan Marsh mistook Rasike Attanayake for the suspect, arrested him and punched him in the head in Romford, east London, in November 2022.

Appearing at City of London Magistrates' Court, the 33-year-old from Canvey Island, in Essex, was found guilty of one charge of common assault.

Bodyworn camera footage was played in court showing the officer punching Mr Attanayake during the arrest.

District Judge Amanda Pilling said Marsh had used "gratuitous violence" and his actions were not "necessary, justified or proportionate".
