A 51-year-old Metropolitan Police officer has appeared in court accused of historic sexual offences when he was a teenager.

PC Anthony Rowley pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault on a girl under the age of 14.

The allegations are said to have occurred in Croydon between 1988 and 1989, before Mr Rowley was an officer.

Mr Rowley appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court and was bailed until 24 April.

The officer, from Peckham, south-east London, was arrested on 1 June and charged on 27 February.

He works in the force's South Area Command and has been suspended from duty.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards is also running a misconduct investigation.
