Three men have died after a car crash on Sunday night

Three men in their 20s have died after the car they were travelling in crashed down an embankment and hit a footbridge in north-west London.

The Metropolitan Police were called to Staples Corner, Brent Cross at 23:26 BST on Sunday where the car had broken through a fence at the retail park.

The three men died at the scene, while the two survivors, also a similar age, were taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed no other vehicle was involved and the car was not stolen.

One of the crash victims has been critically injured and the other escaped with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers believe that a number of cars were in the car park at the time and enquires are ongoing to establish what happened and to trace those who were in the car park at the time.

Insp William Mcdonald said: "Emergency services responded last night to what seems to have been a terrible accident.

"An urgent police investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances, led by detectives from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

"Officers are in the process of informing the families of the five young people. The families will be supported by specialist officers. I send them my sincere condolences."

The Met, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance responded to the crash.

Fire crews and at least a dozen police officers remained at the scene until midday.

The car was removed from the scene

The car appeared to have crashed into bushes near the roundabout at Staples Corner West.

Emergency services have now removed the wreckage of the vehicle and the police cordon has been lifted and all roads reopened.

Access to both the overpass footpath and an exit off the roundabout on to Edgware Road had been cordoned off with police tape. And a slip road from the A5 was also closed.

No arrests have been made and the force has appealed for witnesses to come forward.
