Greater Manchester Police said Sam, 15, and Clair, 42, died after a BMW X5 collided with their vehicle

A driver who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a crash in which a boy and his mother were killed has been released on bail, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police said Clair, 42, and her son Sam, 15, died after a BMW X5 collided with their vehicle on Ripponden Road, Oldham, on Saturday.

A 13-year-old also suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

The BMW's 35-year-old driver has now been bailed pending further inquiries.

Paying tribute to Clair and Sam, whose surnames have not been released, their family said Christmas would be "immensely difficult not only for us, but for everybody that knew them both".

A police representative asked anyone who may have seen the BMW X5 in the area in the hours before the collision at about 16:00 GMT to get in touch.
