Men saved after fishing boat sinks off Norfolk

Three people have been rescued from the sea off Norfolk after a fishing boat sank in rough weather.

Lifeboat crews were called just before 0830 BST to an area off Winterton.

Both Caister and Happisburgh lifeboats were called to the stricken boat, which is understood to be a Lowestoft-based fishing vessel.

Caister lifeboat crew said when they arrived the boat had sunk and people were in the water.

Everyone on board was rescued, but a dog tethered on the boat drowned.

The boat's crew were taken back to Gorleston lifeboat station as the sea conditions were too rough to get them back to shore at Caister.

Lifeboatman Jason Delf said: "It was very rough with a 6ft (2m) swell and visibility was not good.

"The coastguard gave us a rough position and the name of the vessel, which was Viking, but that's all we knew.

"Within seconds the boat overturned and sank. The people were lucky. We are such a fast boat we were able to get there.

"We were probably half a mile (800m) away but if we had not spotted the vessel we would not then have seen the people in the water because of the swell and poor visibility."
