Council votes to abolish speed cameras in Norfolk

  • Published

Councillors have voted to get rid of speed cameras in Norfolk in a bid to save £1m.

The move was one of four options considered by Norfolk County Council on Wednesday, in response to a 40% cut in road safety grants by the government.

It means the council will not fund the Safety Camera Partnership, which runs 22 fixed speed cameras.

The council's cabinet will make a final decision on the issue at its meeting in October.

The environment, transport and development scrutiny panel heard that 400 people are killed or seriously injured every year on Norfolk roads.

Cost-cutting options it also considered were reductions in road improvements, safety education initiatives and road law enforcement.
