Tesco could get go ahead for Campbell's site in Norfolk

An extended Tesco store could be built on an old factory site in a Norfolk town despite objections that it is too near a rival supermarket.

Tesco wants to create an Extra store in King's Lynn by demolishing the former Campbell's buildings next door to its Hardwick supermarket.

Councillors in west Norfolk have been recommended to approve the revised plan.

In June, Tesco was turned down in favour of a Sainsbury's store nearby.

Lawyers for Tesco challenged the refusal but lost its legal fight, on the basis of the previous plans, last month.

Consultants said the cumulative effect of two superstores would pull trade away from the Vancouver Quarter shopping area.

A restaurant, pub and car showroom are included in the plans for the site, less than half a mile (804m) from a Sainsbury's store which is being created within the former PinguinLutosa frozen food factory.

The empty buildings Tesco wants to knock down include a structure known locally as the Campbell's soup tower, which has been part of the town's skyline for 50 years.

Murdock Property Group, which owns the Vancouver Quarter, has objected to the new proposal, claiming it would be to the detriment of plans to expand the town centre.

Councillors are due to discuss the issue on Monday.
