King's Lynn recycling plant preferred bidder named

A preferred bidder for a planned £150m recycling plant which would power 36,000 Norfolk homes has been named.

Norfolk County Council is being recommended to appoint the company Cory Wheelabrator to build and run the plant at Saddlebow near King's Lynn.

The facility would process about 260,000 tonnes of rubbish every year.

It would also save the council £8m a year that could be spent sending rubbish to landfill sites, a council spokeswoman said.

The new facility would burn the waste and convert it into electricity for 36,000 homes.

'Long way'

The council meeting will take place on 2 November.

Ann Steward, Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for sustainable development, said: "We still have a long way to go with this process.

"Cory Wheelabrator will have to apply for planning permission and secure an environmental permit from the Environment Agency by proving the facility can meet strict emissions limits."

It is thought the facility could be ready in 2015.

The council said it was being aided by a £169m grant from the government over 25 years.
