Norfolk Brooms Boats in turnaround after jobs cut

A Norfolk firm which had to close its boat-building business last year with the loss of 70 jobs has said it has turned itself around.

In September 2010, CJ Broom and Son, of Brundall, became insolvent after losing more than £1m due to a downturn in boat sales.

Seventy people were laid off, but managing director Mark Garner said 30 were soon reinstated due to demand.

"Over the last 12 months we've taken on another 20 people," he added.

"We're constantly looking for one or two people a week as the demand slowly grows and rebuilds."

All other parts of the Broom organisation - the marina, brokerage, repairs, refurbishment and waterside diesel - were unaffected.

Broom Boats was established in 1898 by Charles J Broom who was the grandfather of the previous managing director, Martin Broom.
