Norfolk Police bollard crash officer suspended from driving

The patrol car mounted the pavement and crashed through four bollards

A police officer has been suspended from driving duties after crashing a patrol car through a row of bollards on a pavement.

The accident happened on Fye Bridge, Norwich, about 4:45 BST on 29 May and was captured on CCTV by a nearby pub.

Footage of the incident was posted on YouTube and has been viewed more than 39,000 times.

Norfolk Police are investigating the crash and the police officer has been suspended from driving police vehicles.

In a statement, the force said: "The officer was unhurt and the vehicle was recovered... the circumstances of the collision are being investigated."

The incident was captured on CCTV by the Ribs of Beef pub.

Landlady Anthea Cawdron said: "I've been so surprised at the reaction to the clip. I posted it because people in the pub wanted to see what happened.

Police are investigating the incident

"We were just glad the street was deserted and it wasn't later in the day when people would have been around.

"I'm really sympathetic to the poor guy driving. I'm so glad he wasn't hurt - at least, nothing more than his pride."

Police refused to comment on whether the officer was asleep, but confirmed: "The officer has subsequently been suspended from driving police vehicles, pending the outcome of the investigation."
