Norfolk County Council chooses new leader

Derrick Murphy stepped down as leader, saying he did not want to become an election issue

A new leader has been selected for Norfolk County Council by the council's ruling Conservative group.

Acting leader and cabinet member for the environment Bill Borrett has been selected to replace Derrick Murphy.

Mr Murphy stepped down after a standards committee found he had brought his office into disrepute and needed to receive ethics training.

Mr Borrett, who lives in Hoe, near Dereham, represents Elmham and Mattishall on the council.

He has been selected leader of the Conservative group and is expected to officially become leader of the council at a special meeting of the authority.

Mr Borrett said: "I am honoured and delighted to have my colleagues' trust, confidence and support to lead the group into the May elections.

"This is very much a case of 'business as usual' and the cabinet and I will continue to implement the vision we set out for the authority.

"At this time, what is most important is that the council continues to be run as efficiently and effectively as possible."
