Norfolk sea defence damage warning as flood alert issued

A flood alert has been issued as two exceptionally high tides are expected on the Norfolk coast, threatening sea defences that were damaged last month.

The Environment Agency said a shingle ridge at Salthouse had been damaged further by high tides and stormy seas.

Sea water had flooded the road through the village and this could get worse.

James Mason, from the agency, said more alerts could be issued for the county later as exceptional spring tides were expected over a 48-hour period.

"We're expecting spring tides to peak on Friday and Saturday night," he said.

"They're not likely to be as high or as strong as last month's tidal surge but we are keeping a watch for flooding all along the Norfolk coast."

Two boats, normally used by the fire service in Norfolk for river rescues, have been sent to potential flood areas in Somerset as part of its commitment to the national Resilience Team.
