Police were called to the grounds of St Mary's Church in Diss after a man was found dead

A man whose body was found in church grounds had suffered a head injury, police said.

Officers were called to St Mary's Church, in Diss town centre, Norfolk, just before 09:00 BST on Tuesday.

However, results of a post-mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist on Wednesday have proved "inconclusive".

Police said the man's death remained unexplained, but officers did not think anyone else was involved.

Church Street, outside the 14th Century building, has been reopened after being sealed off, while a cordon around the church grounds is due to be lifted.

Insp Laura Symonds said: "I would like to thank people living and working in the town centre for their patience while officers have been conducting their inquiries. A policing focus will remain in that area."

Local people said the victim, who has not yet been named, was believed to be in his early 40s.

Police have urged anyone in the area of the churchyard between Sunday and Tuesday and who may have information to contact them.
