Proposals for nearly 781 new homes and a new country park to the west of Northampton have been approved by councillors.
The Homes and Communities Agency and Redrow homes have put in the plans for the village of Harpole.
The Norwood Farm scheme was backed by South Northamptonshire Council despite opposition from local residents groups.
A council report says the country park will provide a buffer between the development and Northampton.
The council's development control committee backed the plans on Thursday.
'Major development'
The Norwood Farm homes will form part of the 1,784 home Upton Lodge development - the majority of the homes fall in Northampton Borough Council's area and have already been approved.
A South Northamptonshire Council spokesman said the key issues discussed included the need for the development, the benefits of the country park, and flooding issues.
Stephen Clarke, chairman of the committee, said: "The Norwood Farm proposal is a major development which the council recognises will have a big impact on the area between the edge of Northampton and Harpole.
"The committee discussed all the key issues at length and concluded that the scheme is acceptable in its own right and will bring important benefits to the community such as the country park.
"It will also help to prevent housing development in the district's villages."
