Northampton community worker receives honour

A woman who was instrumental in organising the Northampton Carnival has been appointed MBE in the New Year Honours.

Morcea Antoinette Walker, from Northampton, has been honoured for services to the community.

As well as working on the carnival, Mrs Walker also works with the African and Caribbean community.

She said: "This is for the people that have given me the opportunity to do the things that I've done."

Mrs Walker is originally from Jamaica and moved to the UK with her family when she was nine years old.

Seven people were honoured in Northamptonshire, including Peter Antony Winslow from Wellingborough, who is the chief executive for BGL Group Limited, who was appointed CBE for services to financial services.

Mr Winslow joined the BGL Group in 1995 as deputy managing director and became group chief executive in 1997.

Other people honoured include Dr Frank Newton who was appointed OBE for services to sailing.

And there were MBEs for:

  • Rodney Hunter Corner, for services to the coroners' system

  • Dr Peter John Gordon, for services to emergency care

  • Keith Clarke for services to construction exports

  • Akram Zaman for services to the community
