Roads closed in Northampton after Fat Cats bar fire

Fire crews are still at the scene of a blaze that tore through a Northampton bar.

Fat Cat bar on Bridge Street in Northampton was hit by the fire at about 16.30 GMT on Monday.

The fire was bought under control after 10 hours but Bridge Street and Angel Street is closed because of fears the building could collapse.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Mark Ainge, of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue, said: "Four appliances and a command unit are still at the scene.

"They are focused on damping down and salvage work to support the building... to minimise the risk of building collapse."

The fire started on first floor before spreading to the second floor and roof space, but firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading towards the back section of the building and further along Bridge Street.

No-one was hurt by the fire but one firefighter received minor injuries when part of the flooring collapsed.

At its height, more than 50 firefighters helped to tackle the blaze.

Mr Ainge said Bridge Street and Angel Street will remain closed until a structural engineer has ensured the building is safe.
