Northampton road noise 'horrendous' say residents

Residents say the cobbled parts of the street on Gladstone Road are too noisy

Remedial work is to be carried out on a recently refurbished £1.9m road in Northampton after residents complained about noise levels.

Gladstone Road, a link road between Mill Lane and Spencer Bridge Road in Northampton, was refurbished in 2011.

The county council introduced a 20mph speed limit and installed rumble strips designed to slow cars down.

But contractors are to return to the site after residents said measures made cars sound like a "plane taking off".

'Given assurances'

Joe Copus, a local resident, said: "The road makes such a noise it keeps us awake at night. If cars are doing more than 20mph the noise is horrendous."

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: "We have been speaking with the residents association and although the current surface has reduced speeding along this route, we are aware of their concerns about noise levels."

The council said it would conduct a noise and materials survey on the road before the final changes were made.

Labour councillor Gareth Eales, who has been campaigning to get the road altered, said: "We have been given assurances that this would work, otherwise the council would go to plan B, which means re-tarmacing the whole road."

Northampton Borough Council said it was expecting any costs incurred to be covered by the sub-contractor.
