Plans to honour soldier James Ashworth at Corby Cube

An area outside Corby Cube could be named after L/Cpl James Ashworth

A soldier who was killed in Afghanistan and received a posthumous Victoria Cross could be honoured in his hometown in Northamptonshire.

L/Cpl James Ashworth, 23, from Corby, died under enemy fire as he tried to eliminate an insurgent position in Afghanistan in June.

The area in front of Corby Cube could be named the James Ashworth VC Square.

Corby Borough Council said it was "very keen to do something to recognise James's achievement".

Tom Beattie, leader of the council, said a plaque honouring L/Cpl Ashworth would also be added to the square.

"There's not very many people who achieve the Victoria Cross," Mr Beattie said.

"We've already had discussions with James's family and have their agreement to name the square after James."

Mr Beattie said details had to be finalised but he hoped the tribute would be in place "very soon".
