Kettering Town FC Poppies to bid for Rockingham Road

The club played at the Elgoods Brewery Arena on Rockingham Road, Kettering, until 2011

A Northamptonshire football club has said it wants to bid for its "spiritual home" ground which was repossessed in 2011.

Kettering Town FC, known as the Poppies, said it would buy its former Rockingham Road ground if conditions at the site were "favourable".

The Elgoods Brewery Arena ground was the club's home for 100 years.

In a statement on its website, the club said most of its fans would "welcome a return to our spiritual home".

The club has played its home games at Irthlingborough and Burton Latimer since the club lost the Rockingham Road ground, three years ago.

The board has intended to return to Kettering and said earlier this year it wanted to secure a long-term home for the club before the end of the season.

As the sale of the Rockingham Road ground is a closed bidding procedure, the board said it would continue to follow up its aim to buy a ground on the site of the former Avondale School in Kettering.

"We will also continue to explore other ground options to ensure Kettering can continue to build on the foundations put in place in the last two years," the club said on its website.
