Hinton-in-the-Hedges light aircraft crash kills pilot

The pilot of a light aircraft has been killed in a crash in Northamptonshire.

Emergency services were called to the accident at Hinton-in-the-Hedges airfield near Brackley at 12:10 BST, police said.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said crews arrived "within minutes" to treat a man who was described as having serious injuries.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said it would now be carrying out an inquiry with Northamptonshire Police.

A police spokesman said next-of-kin were being informed and no further details would be released at this stage.

Northamptonshire fire crews were also called to the site, but the service said airfield staff were already dealing with the incident by the time they arrived.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage was injured following a light aircraft crash at the same airfield on the day of the 2010 General Election.

The Air Accident Investigation Bureau later concluded the crash was caused by the tow line for an election banner pulled by the plane becoming wrapped around the tailplane.
