A man who was struck on the M1 motorway in Northamptonshire after his car broke down has died.

The crash happened at about 03:30 BST on the southbound side, between junction 17 and Watford Gap Services.

Four other people in the grey Mercedes and the driver of the silver Toyota that was involved in the collision received minor injuries.

The crash led to the M1 being shut in both directions for several hours, but it has since been reopened.

Northamptonshire Police said the man in his 40s, from Bedfordshire, was driving the Mercedes which broke down on the inside lane.

He was standing at the back of the car when he was hit by the Toyota and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam footage of the collision, or of the vehicle prior to the incident.

National Highways said the road reopened at about 09:30.
