Northampton firefighters tackle large town centre blaze

Firefighters have tackled a large blaze at a four-storey building in Northampton town centre.

Northamptonshire Fire Service was called to Bridge Street at about 23:00 BST on Tuesday.

Nine fire engines and additional specialist crews attended the blaze, which was close to several bars and restaurants.

People in the area were advised to keep windows and doors shut to stop smoke filling their homes and businesses.

In a statement, the fire service said:, external "Please be aware of potential disruption and continue to avoid the area for the time being."

Crews and police officers remained at the building on Wednesday afternoon and said both ends of Bridge Street remained closed, as well as Mercers Row, Gold Street and Drapery.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, interim chief fire officer Simon Tuhill said: "It's very early stages, but we will carry out a full investigation jointly with Northamptonshire Police to try to determine the cause."

Local police have since put out an appeal for information, external.
