Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa wears Grenson shoes from Rushden

A shoe firm said it loved the opportunity to supply shoes seen throughout the Christmas episode of Doctor Who.

The colourful trainers were made by Grenson shoes, whose factory is in Rushden, Northamptonshire.

They were worn by the latest actor to play the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, who was making his debut in the episode.

Grenson's chief executive said another pair of the firm's footwear would also be appearing in the series.

The Christmas instalment of the iconic series, entitled "The Church on Ruby Road", featured baby-stealing goblins and a new assistant for the time-travelling doctor who turned out to be an orphan searching for her family.

As the 15th doctor fights to escape the ropes that bind him in a goblin ship; runs across the roofs of buildings; and climbs a rope ladder into a helicopter, he is seen wearing the sneakers with a distinctive "G" logo for Grenson shoes.

Tim Little, the firm's chief executive, said the makers of the show contacted him some time ago: "It was right at the very beginning of filming and we got a call from one of the wardrobe stylists.

"I think what they do is they collect a lot of shoes, a lot of clothing in and then they try it all out."

The firm was then asked to send more pairs of shoes but heard nothing more until they saw the sneakers being worn by Ncuti Gatwa in the Radio Times.

Mr Little added: "They've chosen to make what he wears important to his identity, so to have a pair of shoes - especially a pair of quite quirky-looking shoes, very brightly coloured - was really special and we loved being part of it."

Mr Little also believes another pair of Grenson shoes will be appearing in Doctor Who: "In one of the episodes, he'll be wearing a pair of our classic brogues as well.

"We haven't been officially told that but we've seen pictures from various fan sites."
