The government's housing agency has announced an extra £2m for a development of homes for the over-55s.

The project, which will cost £18m, is being built in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on the site of a complex of retirement flats that was demolished last year.

The developers, Greatwell Homes, said it would contain 57 one and two bedroom flats.

The complex is scheduled to open in October 2025.

Hearnden Court was built on Henshaw Road in Wellingborough in 1964 but had been vacant since 2020.

Demolition began in September last year.

The new development, Dappletree View, will be Greatwell Homes' first scheme offering an extra level of care to people aged over 55.

The firm said the flats would have "enhanced accessibility, including elevators and spacious hallways, and rooms to support wheelchair and low mobility access".

The project has already received £2.8m from the government's housing and regeneration agency, Housing England.

The agency has now announced it will be putting another £2m into the project.

Julie Robinson, executive director at Greatwell Homes, said: "We're delighted to receive this additional funding to further support the build of Dappletree View.

"This scheme is going to be an exciting, modern home to those in later living with picturesque views of green spaces to the rear of the building.

"Dappletree View is all about supporting those in later living to live as independently as possible and will continue to support the ageing population as years go by".

Bhups Gosal, head of provider management at Homes England, said: "Increasing the supply of quality affordable homes remains one of our key objectives and we are committed to supporting ambitious housebuilders of all sizes to build those homes and communities.

"This investment through the Affordable Homes Programme does just that, enabling Greatwell Homes to build 57 much needed new homes the people of Wellingborough can be proud of."
