Sneinton market transformation under way

The square is expected to be completed by the end of the year

The transformation of Sneinton Market in Nottingham into a public square is getting under way.

The aim is to create a new space to be used for public performances, markets, festivals and community events.

It forms part of the £6.8m "Connecting Eastside" scheme. The redevelopment of the Victoria Leisure Centre on the edge of Sneinton Market has already started.

Local markets using the market place will continue to trade while the improvements take place.

It is hoped the new square will improve pedestrian and cycle links between the city, Sneinton and St Ann's.

Tonnes of granite paving will be laid - which the council said was in keeping with the area's history.

The redevelopment should be complete towards the end of the year.

Councillor Jane Urquhart, portfolio holder for transport and area working, said: "Citizens and visitors alike will be able to enjoy the new square. It will breathe new life into the area and become a destination in its own right."

Wendy Honeyman-Smith of Sneinton Community Traders, added: "The redevelopment of the square will give an opportunity for the markets to get bigger and better in the future, and our message to customers is that it's very much business as usual in the meantime."
