The owners of Nottingham's Victoria Centre have submitted plans to the city council to expand it.
The £240m project would expand the site by 50% and create more than 2,000 jobs, Capital Shopping Centres said.
The new-look centre would house a new department store, bus station, cinema, additional shops and restaurants.
It would be extended to the north, on the current multi-storey car park, which would be replaced with a new underground car park.
'Welcome boost'
Centre manager Richard Bowler said: "The Victoria Centre has been at the heart of Nottingham for 40 years and will be part of its success in the years to come.
"We have taken meticulous care to understand the views of local residents, shoppers and the community about our plans.
"And with the support of Nottingham City Council, we hope to start work on the centre as early as next year."
The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce said the plans would "provide a welcome boost to the economy".
