Newark Palace Theatre faces reduced opening

Falling ticket sales did not reach the levels predicted

A Nottinghamshire theatre looks set to cut the number of days it opens its doors in a bid to save money.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has said it needs to reduce the amount of subsidy it pays to Newark's Palace Theatre by about £100,000.

The move follows lower than predicted ticket sales at the venue, along with council budget savings.

The plan would see the theatre cut its opening days to five a week along with moves to increase ticket prices.

'Fantastic shows'

The proposals, which also include increasing hire charges and ceasing film screenings, follow a six-week public consultation.

If approved, the plans would see the venue close on Sundays and Mondays.

Councillor Roger Jackson, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "The consultation was key to us putting forward the best possible options for the Palace Theatre for next year.

"We've listened to what people and groups have been saying about how they use the theatre and we've shaped the proposals around it.

"Later in the month, the council's cabinet will look into the details behind the proposals and will make a decision on how we move forward with a new year and a new season of fantastic shows at the Palace."
