Nottingham Enterprise Zone 'could create 10,000 jobs'

An extension to the Enterprise Zone in Nottingham could create up to 10,000 new jobs, business leaders have said.

The original zone based at Boots in Lenton and Beeston was one of 11 announced by the government in 2011.

The extension will increase the existing site from 40 hectares (98.8 acres) to 56.5 hectares (139.6 acres).

Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce hopes the expansion will create jobs by attracting new technology businesses to the city.

Its chief executive George Cowcher said: "There is a considerable amount of land here, which is associated with existing employers like Boots, making it attractive for inward investment.

"We are very anxious not to cause displacement, not only in Nottingham, but from surrounding counties as well.

"What we are looking to do is attract new companies to the area," he said.

He added that the zone's association with technology was key to attracting both foreign and UK investment.

Councillor Jon Collins, leader of Nottingham City Council, said: "The news that the Boots' Enterprise Zone is being extended is excellent news for the city.

"It will not only drive growth and boost the regional economy by creating jobs, but it will also mean the redevelopment and regeneration of an enormous area of the city," he said.

The extended zone will be available to new businesses, who will receive business rate discounts for five years and super-fast broadband.

Nottingham Science Park, Beeston Business Park and Nottingham Medipark will also become part of the new Enterprise Zone.
