Nottinghamshire County Council wants to save £1.25m a year with its lights switch-off programme

Street lights in two Nottinghamshire towns will be switched on again after hundreds of people signed petitions against switch-off plans.

About 200 lights in Bingham and 150 in Keyworth will remain on between midnight and 05:30 BST, Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed.

Many street lights were switched off between these times last June in Bingham and in January in Keyworth.

More than 800 people signed a petition calling for the lights to remain on.

Nottinghamshire County Council is aiming to save £1.25m on its energy bill by altering more than 90,000 lights across the county over the next three years.

Councillor Richard Jackson, the chairman of the county council's highways and transport committee, said: "We have said all along that we would be taking a flexible approach to the programme.

"The fact that we are turning some lights back on in places like Bingham and Keyworth demonstrates that we are prepared to respond to any issues and make changes if they are justified."
