Nottingham tram bridge 'inched' into position

A 1,100-tonne bridge which will carry Nottingham's new tram line across a railway has been moved into place.

Engineers took several weeks to slowly move a 340ft (104m) section of bridge across to Nottingham railway station.

From next year the Karlsruhe Friendship Bridge - named after Nottingham's German twin town - will carry trams to the station as part of a £570m extension to the network.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

A section of the steel bridge was moved into position in February and sat over Queen's Road until the final stage began in early May.

The station and adjacent roads were kept open, with Nottingham City Council saying that had "minimised the impact" to the public.

Work will now take place to lay a concrete deck on the bridge and install the tram tracks and a new tram stop at Nottingham Station.

Nottingham City Councillor Jane Urquhart said: "It's wonderful to see this landmark tram bridge continue its journey over Nottingham Station."
