Paralympian gold medallist Richard Whitehead has set off on his challenge to run 40 marathons in 40 days.

Mr Whitehead, from Nottinghamshire, will run the equivalent of 40 marathons as he runs from John O'Groats to Land's End.

He set off on his journey on Tuesday and has encouraged other runners and cyclists to join him along the way. "At the moment, I’m just taking it a day at a time and making sure that I’m concentrating on each day in terms of 10k chunks," he said.

On day two he ran along the east coast of Scotland towards Helmsdale.

He has a team of doctors and physiotherapists who are travelling on the route with him.

Mr Whitehead, a double amputee, broke a world record and won gold in the 200m T24 event at last year's Paralympics in London.

He said: "I’m living proof that having a disability shouldn’t stop you from achieving your goals. I’m a strong believer in living a life without limits."

The athlete is hoping to raise £1m for Sarcoma UK and Scope with his challenge Richard Runs Britain.
