World War One medals have been stolen from a Nottinghamshire house a day before Remembrance Sunday.

The items were taken from a property in New Hill, Walesby, at about 15:45 GMT on Saturday. Two men got into the house through an unlocked back door.

One man spoke to an elderly woman who lived there, while the other searched upstairs and took the medals from a cigar box, police said.

They left when the woman's husband returned to the house from the garden.

Det Sgt Gary Hewson said: "This is a despicable crime, which has taken place the day before Remembrance Sunday.

"If you know anything that could help us catch these offenders and return these war medals to this couple then please get in touch."
