Actor Sir David Jason has visited an air base in Nottinghamshire to give his support to young pilots and test a new glider simulator.

The Only Fools and Horses star also handed over a £1m cheque sponsoring the Air Cadets at an event at RAF Syerston, near Newark.

He said he was passionate about flying and learned to fly using gliders.

"It was the cheapest way I could get to throw myself into the air and get off the ground," Sir David added.

Sir David, a qualified helicopter pilot, tested out the squadron's new £25,000 flight simulator during his visit.

Passing on advice to the young cadets, he added: "You don't need an academic mind to fly. You just need the dedication and love for it.

"These technical machines will allow young people to experience flying and will get them off the ground even when it is raining."
