Fundraising complete for Sirrel and Wheeler statue at Notts County

Enough money has been raised to pay for a statue of two men considered to be Notts County's greatest-ever management team.

More than £100,000 was needed for a statue of Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler at Meadow Lane.

The target was reached this weekend following a sponsored walk from Wheeler's former home in Wollaton, to the club's stadium.

It is hoped the statue could be unveiled to the public in April.

Andrew Edwards, who has been working on the statue for the past three years, was also responsible for the statue of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at Pride Park in Derby

It has taken nearly five-and-a-half years to raise the £102,000, following the deaths of both Sirrel and Wheeler in 2008 and 2009.

The statue, created by sculptor Andrew Edwards, will be located on the pavement south of Ashling Court, in Meadow Lane, near the entrance of Notts County's stadium.

Lisa Black, the chairperson of the Jimmy and Jack Memorial Fund, broke the news the target had been reached on the fundraising group's Facebook page.

She said: "We have met some wonderful people who have Notts County running through their veins and we know that this special monument means so much to so many people and so we are resolute in our determination to make sure that we see it in place before the end of this season."

Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler became local icons after they led the Magpies to a number of achievements, including promotion to the First Division in 1981.
