Firefighters tackle blaze at Gotham GP surgery

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a village hall and GP surgery in Nottinghamshire.

Crews were called to Gotham Memorial Hall, off Nottingham Road, at about 10:25 GMT on Thursday.

The Orchard Surgery practice, which was located in the hall, has been gutted by the flames.

Nigel Cartwright, a doctor who worked at the surgery for 30 years, said he and others had been left "shocked" by the fire.

"People could feel their heart pounding with the anxiety that something they relied on and an area that was the hub of the community has been so disastrously taken away from them," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Patients have been told they will be seen at the surgery's Kegworth site for the foreseeable future.

Residents nearby were advised to keep doors and windows closed while the fire was brought under control.

No injuries have been reported.
