A refrigerated lorry carrying dairy products including yoghurt and milk has overturned and crashed through the central reservation of the A1 in Nottinghamshire.
Police shut the northbound carriageway of the A1, between Markham Moor and the A57, due to the collision at about 03:30 BST on Thursday.
The southbound carriageway is also restricted to one lane.
Officers said drivers should prepare for delays throughout the morning.
National Highways said pallets of dairy products needed to be removed before it could be "uprighted" and taken away.
A diversion route is in place and motorists have been urged to avoid the area if possible.
