A pilot has been killed in a plane crash in a Nottinghamshire village.
Emergency services were called after the light aircraft hit fields east of Darlton Airfield, near Retford, at 12:23 BST on Wednesday.
The pilot, who was in his 70s, was believed to be the only person on board the plane.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said a team of inspectors arrived at the scene in the evening to begin an investigation.
Debris could be seen in the field where the crash happened.
Fire engines and other emergency services were at the scene throughout the night into Thursday.
Nottinghamshire Police said the pilot's family was being supported by specially trained police officers.
A statement from the AAIB confirmed it had launched an investigation into a fatal accident involving a single-engine light aircraft.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the "serious incident" shortly after midday on Wednesday, and that fire crews had been "working with partners to make the scene safe."
Area manager of the fire service Bryn Coleman added: "It is with our deepest regrets that we can confirm the pilot, a man in his 70s, died on scene. There were no other injuries.
"Our heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of the individual and all those affected."
