Watch: Giant blaze at industrial waste site in Newark

Police have begun an investigation into a major fire that ripped through an industrial compound in Nottinghamshire.

Multiple crews were at the scene in Northgate, Newark on Trent, from about 15:00 GMT on Saturday.

A huge plume of black smoke was seen from several miles away, as about 200 tonnes of recycled plastic burned.

Nottinghamshire Police said no-one was injured and the fire was extinguished a few hours later. The force confirmed on Monday that an inquiry was under way.

The blaze destroyed large quantities of plastic and damaged plant equipment, a police spokesperson said.

"Inquiries are still ongoing to establish exactly what happened, but we don't currently believe foul play to have been involved," they added.
