A new leisure complex and indoor market are being planned to try to regenerate Worksop town centre.

The Priory Centre, in Bridge Place, has been earmarked for the new market, a food court, bowling alley, climbing wall and indoor adventure play area.

Bassetlaw District Council has bought the shopping centre after receiving £17.9m of levelling up funding from the government in January.

The council hopes to complete the scheme by early 2025.

The town's current street market will be relocated from Bridge Street as part of the plans.

Council cabinet member Julie Leigh said: "We intend to revitalise Worksop town centre, including making an investment in our markets that will open up a number of new opportunities for both traders and the public.

"A new indoor home for the markets presents traders with the option to operate seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, should they wish to do so, breathing new life into a market that has been established over many years."

The council, which is putting £2m into the scheme, said it costs £183,000 annually to run the market and it said the move would secure its future.

Traders, businesses and the public are being asked to give the council their views on the scheme at a series of events at The Priory Centre Hub, on Bridge Street, over the coming weeks.
