NET is reminding customers they have to buy tickets before boarding trams

Tram fare dodgers in Nottingham have been warned they will face £70 fines in a pre-Christmas crackdown.

Nottingham Express Transport (NET) said it would take a "zero tolerance" approach to passengers who have not paid for a ticket.

Extra plain-clothed officers are to be deployed on trams and at stops across the network from Monday.

NET said it had issued 7,682 penalty notices to non-paying passengers so far this year.

It said 2,580 customers had been prosecuted for not paying those fines.

Under NET rules, passengers have to buy tickets before they board trams.

Sarah Turner, service delivery and safety director, said: "Our new campaign will also aim to tackle those who choose to walk away, thinking they can get away with it.

"All our trams and stops have plenty of high-definition CCTV which, as well as keeping our customers safe, makes it far easier to spot and call out anyone that's guilty of travelling without a pass - especially when partnered with our increased presence on the ground."
