One of Santa's elves was hit by a car and left in need of surgery while he was doing work for charity.

The elf was injured while accompanying a sleigh going along Porchester Road in Mapperley, Nottingham, and left with broken bones as a result.

Gedling and District Round Table arranges for Santa to tour the streets in his sleigh each year, raising money for good causes at the same time.

The organisation has asked people to be mindful when they see the sleigh.

A spokesman said: "This time of the year, with darkness falling so early, is a challenge for all road users and pedestrians.

"We would like to remind everyone to be wary and extra vigilant - not just of sleighs but of children coming home from school, as well as the many residents of our communities going about their day-to-day business."

Sleigh runs continue

The elf was hit by the car on Monday evening.

The spokesman said Santa and the other elves "continued the sleigh run last night with his best wishes as he was transported to hospital".

Gedling and District Round Table raised about £4,000 last year by doing sleigh runs.

Santa will be touring different areas around Nottingham each day this week, and people can get details of the planned routes on Gedling and District Round Table's Facebook page, external.
