A girl has been given a bravery award from an ambulance service after coming to her mother's aid when she was struggling to breathe.

Seven-year-old Kiran was at home in Wollaton, Nottingham, with her four young siblings when they discovered their mum, Lytina, gasping for air.

Lytina subsequently passed out on the kitchen floor at 20:28 GMT on 4 May.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said Kiran stayed calm and called 999, despite no other adult being present.

EMAS presented Kiran with the bravery award, with her mother and siblings Kavita, Kajal, Kiyara and Raja joining her as she received the honour.

Not only was Kiran quick to act in making the 999 call, ambulance staff said she was "fantastic" in keeping her siblings calm.

Kiran said: "When I saw what was happening to mum, I couldn't sit there and do nothing.

"I didn't want to lose her, so called 999.

"I calmed my siblings down by telling them it was going to be OK.

"I felt nervous but was so relieved when the ambulance crew arrived and told me mum was going to be OK."

'Vision went black'

Lytina said she was washing pots in the kitchen when her choking became "severe".

"Despite breathing in or out, I wasn't able to get any air," Lytina added.

Lytina said she banged on the kitchen counter, as she could not call out to her children for help.

When the children came, she said she went outside to get some fresh air.

"By the time I came inside, my vision went black, and I fell to the floor," Lytina said.

"They all did a fantastic job in reassuring me it was all going to be OK as I didn't think I'd survive. My thoughts were consumed with who would look after the kids if I were no longer here.

"I'm so proud of them for acting so quickly."

Kiran's call was answered by 999 emergency medical advisor Helen King, who said Kiran "handled the situation really well and was brilliant throughout".
