Walkden Street car park was closed last month over maintenance concerns

A multi-storey car park in a Nottinghamshire town will close for at least 12 months after inspections found "several structural issues".

Walkden Street car park in Mansfield was shut on 29 February for maintenance and inspections, which identified the wider problems.

The district council said the scope of the required repairs was "extensive".

The town's Four Seasons Shopping Centre car park is also facing a £2m repair bill following inspections.

Both Four Seasons, with 419 spaces, and Walkden, with 307, are major town centre facilities, but Mansfield District Council said there was enough capacity to cope.

Small areas of the car park at Four Seasons have been cordoned off recently to "facilitate isolated repairs and testing works".

Inspections found that a number of improvements were required, including concrete deck waterproofing, and drainage repairs and replacement.

Once work starts, it is estimated the project will take nine to 12 months, and it is expected most of the car park will remain open during this time.

The council said the total investment in Four Seasons would be about £2m, with this funding already identified within the authority's capital programme.
