Watch: Take a trip down Nottingham's rarely seen catacombs

Curious residents and history buffs are being given the chance to walk inside rarely-seen catacombs that lie beneath a city cemetery.

The partially-completed catacombs are part of Rock Cemetery in Nottingham and were sealed off to the public for years.

The cemetery opened in 1856 and was designed by solicitor Edwin Patchitt, who wanted to create "the most unique and magnificent catacomb... in the kingdom".

But mystery surrounds why construction of the catacombs ceased.

They were later closed to the public after New Age travellers began living in them, cave tour guide Allan Mather said.

Guided visits are now organised by Nottingham City Council, with sold-out dates and long waiting lists reported.

"Most of the people that came on them are locals that have always wanted to come in," Mr Mather added.
