The council said the new route would mean cyclists could travel across the city safely

Four weeks of road closures will begin soon as part of work to create a cycle route across Nottingham city centre.

The overnight closures will centre on London Road and Parliament Street, starting on 7 April.

When complete, the route will link the Western Cycle Corridor, which finishes at Castle Boulevard, with the eastern leg, starting at Sneinton Hermitage.

Councillor Angela Kandola said: "We are working hard to minimise disruption as we move into the final phase."

The route will run across the city from Castle Boulevard, via Canal Street, and on to BBC island and Fisher Gate.

The council said the intention was for cyclists to then use the crossing in Pennyfoot Street and head to Lace Way and the City Link area, where it is quiet, before joining the eastern leg.

The eastern path runs along Daleside Road to the county boundary.

Work on the cross city cycle route is being paid for by a central government grant

Work on the new route will start on 7 April and will take place overnight, Monday to Friday, 22:00 to 06:00, for four weeks.

It will include road resurfacing works on London Road Roundabout, Lower Parliament Street, Hollow Stone and Fisher Gate.

There will also be daytime closures of one lane at a time to protect new surfacing joints.

On nights when events finish late at Motorpoint Arena, road closures will start at 23:00 to ensure concertgoers have left.

The route has been paid for by a central government grant from the Transforming Cities fund, external.

This fund has financed other projects including the Nottingham and Derby cycle hire scheme, and a new pedestrian and cycle footbridge across the River Trent.

City councillor Ms Kandola said: "The cross city cycle route is nearing completion and it's an exciting time for this project."

She said there would be significant diversions in place during the works.
