Motorists faced disruption on roads across the East Midlands after heavy winds battered the region.

A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office on Monday morning, and emergency services urged people to travel with caution.

Numerous reports of fallen trees blocking roads have been made, while flailing debris damaged houses and vehicles in Nottinghamshire.

Winds were set to reach speeds of 46mph in Leicestershire, said the Met Office.

In Nottingham city centre, a large eucalyptus tree fell at about 07:30 BST, forcing police to close Park Row, near to the Playhouse theatre.

Debris, including bricks from neighbouring properties, could be seen in the road, while a tractor arrived to help remove the blockage.

Elsewhere in the county, reports of traffic disruption were made in West Bridgford after trees came down in Malvern Road, Melton Road, Gordon Road and Trevor Road.

Carrie Setchfield, who lives in Selby Road in West Bridgford, said the fences in her garden were toppled by a huge gust of wind.

"It was just really loud when we were at home - it was quite frightening," she said.

"My children said they could almost feel the walls moving.

"We've had fences down and basically all sides of our roof are damaged, so we're waiting for the insurance to come and sort that out.

"[The weather] is just shocking. I've never seen anything like it - it went almost foggy as it arrived and everything went flying and then that was it. It was really weird.

"Thank God nobody was hurt - that's the most important thing."

Chris Booth, who runs a tree services business in the area, was called to the same street by residents to help with the clean-up.

He said: "Someone said there had been a tornado in West Bridgford, but it wasn't until we arrived that we realised how bad it was.

"There was a big gust of wind that only lasted a few minutes; every house on this road has been damaged and there's trees down in every garden.

"We've been doing tree work for more than 20 years but this is the worst [damage] we've ever seen. The phone hasn't stopped ringing all day."

In nearby Wenlock Drive, pictures showed a residential car park strewn with tiles and masonry from damaged buildings.

Fallen trees were also reported in Keyworth, Wilsthorpe Road in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, as well as in Rycroft Road in Hemington, near Castle Donington in Leicestershire.

The yellow weather warning is set to be in place until 22:00 on Monday.
