The attack by Richard Landrygan (left) and Scott Shardlow was "well over the top", said police

A pair of rough sleepers broke a man's arm with his own crutch after being woken up by accident.

A man and a woman who sat down near to Richard Landrygan and Scott Shardlow were attacked by the pair, who had been sleeping in Castle Gate, Nottingham, at around 05:00 BST on 20 June 2023.

One of the victims, who had his foot in a protective boot, had his crutches taken.

Both victims were then beaten to the ground with the makeshift weapon.

They were then kicked and left cut, bruised and covered in blood. The man suffered permanent damage to one of his eyes as well as a broken arm in the attack.

Landrygan and Shardlow were found by police in the area minutes later.

After being brought into custody, Landrygan, 54, then shouted racial abuse at an officer while inside his cell.

Previous crimes

PC Radoslaw Zygulski, of Nottinghamshire Police, said the attack was "well over the top and completely crossed the line of what is acceptable".

He added: "The level of violence and aggression shown during this incident was disgraceful, as was the language used by Landrygan when he was brought into custody."

Shardlow, 45, was linked to two previous crimes in the Sneinton area of Nottingham - the burglary of a games console the previous October and the theft of meat from Aldi that May.

Shardlow admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon in public, theft, and failing to surrender to police.

Landrygan pleaded guilty to charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon in public, and a racially aggravated offence.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, Shardlow, of St Stephen's Road, Sneinton, was jailed for three years and nine months, while Landrygan, of no fixed address, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison.
