Morris dancers celebrate May Day with performance

Morris dancers have celebrated May Day by performing traditional routines in the East Midlands.

Groups around the region headed for high ground as the sun rose on Wednesday, before dancing while waving handkerchiefs and clashing sticks and swords.

Among those to take part were dancers in Uppingham, Rutland, and a group at Laxton Castle in Nottinghamshire.

The morris dancing tradition dates back to at least the 1400s and marks the halfway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice.
