The Green Bus Fund was introduced to kick-start the purchase of low-emission buses

More electric-hybrid buses will be seen on Oxfordshire's roads after a bus firm won a share in a £15m government grant.

Oxford Bus Company received nearly £1.3m for 17 buses from the Green Bus Fund towards the vehicles.

The government introduced the fund to kick-start the purchase of low-emission hybrid and electric buses.

Transport minister Norman Baker said low-carbon buses used at least 30% less fuel and emitted nearly a third less carbon than conventional buses.

Yet he said they currently made up just 0.2% of buses on the road.

"This sector therefore has tremendous potential to reduce the impact of road transport on climate change," he added.

An Oxford Bus Company spokesman said: "We're delighted to have won the funding.

"We will be announcing later exactly which routes the new buses will be used on."
